The Global Leadership Summit 2013 is quickly approaching and the team at The Leadership Centre Willow Creek Canada and our partner churches from coast to coast are delight to let you in on tightly held secret.

The Summit is now 1 Event on 2 Dates – the same speakers, the same programming, the same high-quality experience, now offered twice in Canada – in August and October.

If you are familiar with our journey with the GLS over the last couple years, you will know that it is our hope to increase the impact as much as possible. After asking partners, customers and even prospects about what is preventing them from participating in this world-class training event, the answer always came back the same – the date and the price.

In 2011, we moved the event from coinciding with the US event in August to late September. We also reduced the price and coerced Revenue Canada to move the GLS to a tax free event. Participation was good, but we still hoped for more.

In 2012, we moved the event to mid-October after Thanksgiving. We also simplified our pricing so individuals received the same low rate as groups. Again, participation was good, but we wanted more leaders to be impacted by this catalytic event.

So, this year 2013, we invite you to bring a team to experience our world-class faculty on a date which fits into your schedule – August and/or October. We are offering the event through 11 partner churches in August and an additional 11 in October, so there is likely one near you for both dates. Also, we simplified our pricing again where every participant which WCAC Member or not, receives the same low price. Make note that all church memberships, both new and renewed, now receive one pre-paid registration to the GLS.

This is a lot of exciting news. What does this mean for you or your team?

Studies* have shown that many pastors and church staff are burning out. Peter Drucker, the late leadership guru, said that the four hardest jobs in America (and not necessarily in order, he added) are the president of the United States, a university president, a CEO of a hospital and … a pastor.

80% of pastors say they have insufficient time with spouse and that ministry has a negative effect on their family.

45% of pastors say that they’ve experienced depression or burnout to the extent that they needed to take a leave of absence from ministry.

50% feel unable to meet the needs of the job. Schedules are frantic, demands and expectations are high.

52% of pastors say they and their spouses believe that being in pastoral ministry is hazardous to their family’s well-being and health.

Pastors and church staff are working long hours to keep up, and as a result are spending less time connecting with the Lord, their families and friends. It’s no surprise, then, that they become spiritually, emotionally and relationally disconnected.

We’re here to help change the stats

Bill Hybels says: “Everyone gets better when a leader gets better.” Getting better doesn’t mean working longer and harder. It means being intentional and focused on what really matters. What if you could find tools to help keep you strong and balanced as a leader?

Denominational Offices across Canada are dedicating staff to support Pastoral Wellness and Church Health. Many are using EHS resources and training as part of a greater strategy to keep leaders strong.

We invite you to take a day apart to gain insight, set a new rule of life and focus on what really matters. Gain new skills and insights from a pastor who’s been where you are.

Pete Scazzero had it all: powerful teaching, dynamic ministries, and impressive growth rate, and a vision to do great works for God. Things looked good – but beneath the surface, circumstances and demands were more than just brewing. They were about to boil over. Through profound personal experience, Pete realized the critical link between emotional and spiritual health which turned the failure of his dreams into the beginning of a journey that would forever change him, his church and his relationships.

Join Pete Scazzero, live, for The Emotionally Healthy Leadership Conference coming to a city near you.

97% of Canadian Leaders who have attended The Emotionally Healthy Leadership Conference would recommend this conference to a friend, and wished they had brought their entire leadership team.

We are excited to report that the disciplines of Emotionally Healthy Spirituality are creating personal, leadership, family and church wide transformation in Canada.

Here are more testimonials from Canadian Leaders:

“If the kingdom of God is to advance in the 21st century, Peter’s message of honesty, integrity and spiritual discipline needs to be heard and acted upon by those of us in Christian leadership.”

“I have been to many ‘good’ events over the years that have helped inspire and equip me for Christian leadership. However, in 20 years, I can think of nothing that has compared with Peter Scazzero’s ‘Emotionally Healthy Leadership’ in terms of challenge, relevance and applicability. I would urge colleagues to read the books and to get to hear this man.”

“I belong to a network of transitional pastors/church consultants who are often helping churches who have gone through difficult times. Most of our network attended. Personally I believe the Emotional Health quotient in many churches is low and is largely responsible for a great deal of the difficulty that churches are facing.”

“A conference like this is incredibly valuable to leadership on any level. I cannot say enough good things about it. It will have spiritual ripple effects in my family and church community.”

“I believe strongly in the material Pete has created and that it is very timely, particularly for the North American church. I wish our whole Ministry Team and Elders were there!”

Willow Creek Association President Jim Mellado accepted the position of president of Compassion International effective

September, 2013 and will resign as president of WCA effective June 17. Gary Schwammlein, executive vice-president of WCA’s international ministries will become president in June. Jim fills the CI role that will be vacated by Wess Stafford who will retire as president in 2013. Under his 20-year leadership, Compassion International has grown sevenfold to serve 1.4 million children.

Jim, the president of WCA, has led the organization since 1992 when it served a few hundred pastors and ministry leaders hungry to learn from Willow Creek Community Church how to “do church” to a global ministry that reaches 170,000 leaders and 15,000 churches worldwide.

“The decision for Jim to step into the role at Compassion International was directed by God, so I am at total peace with this transition,” says Bill Hybels, senior and founding pastor of Willow Creek Community Church and Chairman of the Board of WCA. “While we will miss him, his contribution to Compassion’s future will be huge. At the same time, I’ve never been more excited about the potential of WCA to continue its growing influence around the world. None of this is a surprise to God. You watch; He will faithfully guide us into our future.”

Jim will serve with WCA through The Global Leadership Summit 2013 in August and relocate with his family to Colorado in September.

Gary Schwammlein brings vast experience as a corporate executive building and leading companies in many countries as well as 16 years’ experience at WCA where he helped build the ministry to expand beyond the borders of the US and into 90 countries.

“I have no doubt WCA’s mission is well positioned to move forward with great strength to serve local churches and enable them to reach their full redemptive potential,” says Jim.

With a remarkably successful run in 2012 featuring pastor Tim Schroeder and a number of Canadian pastors, INNOVATE is coming to 13 cities in Canada. This year it is an interactive, made-in-Canada initiative that will wrestle with trends, successes and failures experienced coast to coast when considering the Gospel.

Both Moncton and St. John’s events are now under our belt and participating groups are saying some flattering things:

“We brought three people to Innovate Moncton. Excellent and thought provoking. It should help launch some very good discussion at our church and hopefully help us rethink some of the challenges and ideas we have. Thanx!”

“As a leader, I really appreciated the “made in Canada for Canada” material that helped raise the awareness of our current societal reality and energized us about what could be in our attempts to live the gospel as local Churches.

Our City was well represented last night and the level of interaction at the various tables spoke highly of how this struck a chord with the leaders that were present. Innovate stepped into a context here that is more and more passionate about breaking new ground and it breathed new life and insight into the future of the Church here.

Keep up the great work!”

INNOVATE is for enthusiastic, developmentally-minded churches who are hungry to learn and grow. INNOVATE is FREE to attend, however, a donation of $300 per church team is encouraged.

Reflections on Global Leadership Summit

Written by Mike Penninga on 23 October 2012.

KGF was blessed to have 26 of our staff, board members and lay leaders together for the 20th annual Global Leadership Summit. We were part of 7,000 leaders who gathered from around Canada, and over 100,000 leaders around the world who sought to hear from God on the issue of leading our churches well. Two of our team members, Marcus & Amy, share their reflections here.

Part 1 – Marcus Schmaling

I think it would be impossible to walk away from the Global Leadership Summit unchanged—without being profoundly encouraged and spurred on to follow Jesus with renewed passion. From the two days of listening to some of the world’s most gifted Christian leaders, sharing our thoughts and ideas, and praying together as a church (the KGF group gathered together during lunches), I am taking with me three things:

First, Thursday night, after the first day of the summit was over, I had some time to reflect and pray about the day. What struck me was the generous, Spirit-given unity (Phil. 2:2) that was tangible as everyone from KGF shared a bit about themselves and some thoughts from the sessions. I sensed no personal agendas, no hint of competition, only a joyful eagerness to join together our hearts so that we could prayerfully move our church forwards into what God has for us. It is a privilege to serve alongside such diverse and beautifully gifted brothers and sisters.

Second, I felt a heavy sense of responsibility this same night, that God has called me to lead people, to influence them towards Jesus. Moreover, this influence is not from a title (pastor, president, CEO), or a degree, but from shape of my life as I follow Jesus Christ. And like every call God gives, and every gift, we cannot live these out on our own. I am too weak! One of the speakers, Craig Groeschel, shared how he grew into his leadership and pastoring by the love and belief from a mentor. Like him, I need a mentor to keep me in line and to call out the gifts God has placed in me. I need someone who can incarnate God’s love for and belief in me. Don’t we all?!

Lastly, I was deeply impacted by a young woman named Pranitha Timothy. She works for International Justice Missions, where she risks her life to help the oppressed get out of slavery and prostitution. The question was raised, “What makes a leader courageous?”, willing to sacrifice and risk, and she offered a text from Isaiah that transformed her own life: “Behold, my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen…I have put my Spirit upon her, she will bring forth justice to the unbelieving…in faithfulness she will bring justice.” If you were to see this woman you would not think of words like courageous or powerful. But, as she said, in “His hands”, her feebleness makes way for God’s power. Because of her faithfulness, humility, and trust, many children and parents have had their chains broken and have experienced God’s good news. Lord, help us all to walk by Your Spirit that we may see your Kingdom come here in Kelowna and abroad. Not by our strength, but by Your Spirit. Amen.

Part 2 – Amy Wiersma

As I reflect on our time at the Leadership Summit these words come to mind: Challenged… Inspired… Grateful.

I am challenged. I am challenged by the humility, the persistence, and the God-dreams of men and women who have sought hard after God and followed wholeheartedly. Their stories challenge me. They seek hard, they listen well, and they allow no obstacle to get in the way of the vision God has planted in their hearts. Certainly there are stories of discouragement and seeming failure, but they continued to cling to Christ and arise to what God called them to. This is a challenge and encouragement to my sometimes discouraged heart.

I am inspired. After listening to people like Marc Kielburger, Bill Hybels, Condoleezza Rice and others, I am inspired to be faithful in what He’s called me to now, seeking what He’s called me to next, and dreaming God-dreams for the future. I find myself searching the gifts He’s given and the dreams He’s planted in me, some long ago, and some more recent. Since the Summit I find myself praying and seeking God in them to discover what He might be calling to, and what initiative and opportunities I may have pushed aside in thinking they were far too big of dreams for a person like me. The exciting thing is, His strength is made perfect in our weakness. If He calls us, He will equip us. And I believe He is a God who is in the business of using small people to do big things for His glory. I am inspired.

Lastly, my heart is overwhelmed with thanks. Thanks to the KGF Board for being supportive of and investing in leaders. Thanks to God for the incredible leadership our church has been blessed with for this season. Thanks for the growth and excitement in our church. Thanks for the leaders locally and globally who are following God and are impacting businesses and people far beyond what they could have orchestrated on their own. Thanks for the God-movements that are happening all around the world to bring His salvation to people and glory to Himself. These are truly things to be thankful for!

Why do some leaders win and others fail? | Jim Collins – GLS Session #6

October 19, 2012 by Brett Donald

Why do some organizations prevail within struggle while other leaders fail?

Jim Collins opens his session with a very interesting story about Ronald Amundsen and his team that travelled across Antarctica while another team that went at the same time all died.

This is the question that his newest book, Great By Choice addresses. They studied small companies that went from small to great 10x faster than other similiar companies.

What makes a leader win?

A. The Leader is a Level 5 Leader. A Leader with ambition but humility.

B. But there are Three Distinctive Leadership Behaviors that are present in these winning leaders.

Fanatic Discipline

Empirical Creativity

Productive Paranoia

JIM COLLINS

Nationally Acclaimed Business Thinker & Author

A passionate speaker with an intense stare and great mind, Jim is a relentlessly curious student of enduring great companies. He is the author of the leadership classics Built to Last and Good to Great. http://www.jimcollins.com/

SESSION RECAP

1. Fanatic Discipline

The “20 mile march” approach. The idea that if marching across the nation, don’t go more on a good day and less on a bad day but be disciplined to march a consistent 20 miles each day!

Every individual would benefit from having a 20 mile march. Turning good intentions into great results.

Manage yourself in good times so you can make it through the bad.

Commit to your 20 mile march and hit it consistently.

“The signature of mediocrity is not an unwillingness to change but chronic inconsistency.”

But discipline alone is not enough.

2. Empirical Creativity

“Empirical” is the key word. Not just creative ideas alone. Do the research.

It is the genius of the “and.” Blend creativity and discipline.

Creativity is not the hard part. Discipline is.

The real skill is to marry creativity and discipline in such a way that discipline adds to creativity rather than destroying it.

3. Productive Paranoia

Take the paranoia and translate it into preparation

It is what you do before you are in trouble, before difficult times come that makes the difference.

Consider how you manage in good times so that you can be strong when people most need you.

Great leadership is not about what is done to us but what we do. It isn’t what happens to a leader that sets them apart but what they do when the unexpected, surprising, difficult, miraculous, or “lucky” times occur that makes the difference.

QUESTION TO COMMENT ON:

1. What stood out most to you from Jim’s talk?

2. 20 mile march idea. What is an area of your life that you think you need to apply this principle of consistent discipline to?

Favorite Collins Quotes:

“I have been married for 32 years and I consider that a great start.”

“The signature of mediocrity is not an unwillingness to change but chronic inconsistency.”

“even I can’t quantify an aura”

“Greatness is not primarily a function of circumstance. Greatness is firstly a matter of conscious choice and discipline”

“your organization is not truly great if it cannot be great without you”

3 Lessons to Learn from Hybels & from Carly’s Story | Carly Fiorina – GLS Session #5a

October 19, 2012 by Brett Donald

Do I recognize that simple prayers can make a large difference?

3 Specific lessons that can be learned from this session are discussed below.

SUMMARY OF SESSION

Session 5 opened with a video excerpt from the 2007 Leadership Summit. In that clip, Bill really pumped up Carly Fiorina’s book Tough Choices and exhorted every Summit Leader to read the book. That rarely happens and it created a sense of expectancy.

The clip included some discussion of how Carly was fired and the difficult challenges she faced in business and leadership. At the end, Bill prayed for her, her family, and her journey.

The Session continues with Carly sharing her personal story.

Carly shared that as a young person she believed in a personal relationship with God through Jesus.

Into adulthood, she began to think of God more as a big CEO.

Carly explained that as Bill prayed at the end of the interview of the 2007 Summit that she had a spiritual experience that was powerful and she started to reconsider God.

Bill & Carly kept in touch and dialogue continued after the 2007 Summit.

She expressed that it was Bill’s persistence in encouraging her to ponder God that kept her focusing on her spiritual journey.

Carly encountered death in her family. She also got cancer. Yet God’s peace stayed strong. Her life was changed and she had become a believer in Jesus.

Carly’s story of how God changed her life was encouraging and a healthy reminder of some important lessons.

LESSONS TO LEARN FROM HYBELS & FROM CARLY’S STORY

1. Seek opportunities to speak of deeper things. Bill in the interview with Carly in 2007 brought the discussion to spiritual matters. He is looking for opportunity not just waiting for it to happen. If you are a Christian, do you do the same?

2. Don’t underestimate prayer. Carly shared how God moved very powerfully in her life as Bill prayed for her at the end of the 2007 Summit. A simple prayer impacted a life.

3. Persistence counts. Carly shared how in the year following the 2007 Summit Bill continued to dialogue with her and encourage her to consider God. She said his persistence kept her pondering.Who do you need to persist with?

QUESTION TO CONSIDER & COMMENT ON:

1. What is another lesson that can be learned from Carly’s story?

Jesus Changes our World | John Ortberg – GLS Session #4

October 18, 2012 by Brett Donald

Mr. Ortberg wraps up day one! Who is this man, Jesus?

Let us Marvel at Jesus:

Jesus gave the world its most influential movement

Imagine a world with no Church. No Notre Dame, no Augustine, no Mother Teresa, no house churches in China…

Where before the church was there a movement that wanted to include every human regardless of age, ethnicity or gender? There wasn’t one.

The 12 Steps came from an Oxford group who focused on personal transformation. No Jesus, no 12 steps. Jesus has changed the world.

Jesus changed how we think about history

We take progress for granted. In ancient time, history was thought of going in cycles. Time was measured in terms of rulers, i.e 2nd year under rule of….

The creation of the calendar was made in light of the fact that life has meaning and is leading somewhere. A monk proposed the new calendar because of Jesus’ influence.

Every nation is dated in reference to Jesus. For every ruler who dies, their death is dated in relation to Jesus. A.D = in the year of our Lord.

Jesus gave the world its strongest vision.

Look into the roots of any schools, orphanages, hospitals, hospices or any organization that cares for the lowly or weak where they cannot repay – it probably is rooted in Jesus.

The Jesus movement shaped education.

In the Greco-Roman world education was reserved for a few. Not girls. Jesus’ final command was to go and teach everyone. Jesus changed education.

Monasteries for centuries were the only institutions throughout Europe that preserved both religious and secular texts. Monks started schools.

Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard are linked to Jesus. 92% of all colleges and universities founded in the U.S pre-WW2 were founded in the name of Jesus.

Mechanical clocks were invented by monks so they would know when to pray. Eyeglasses were created because monks needed to read over texts.

The Jesus movement revolutionized art.

Dante, Bach, Gregorian chants all are rooted in Jesus.

The Jesus movement changed political theory.

In Roman Empire, it was assumed that the State controlled religion. Jesus introduced a new concept: “give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Mt. 22).

Jesus changed our world. He cannot be ignored.

Favorite Quotes of John:

“We need to stop arguing about Christianity and instead, we need to marvel at Jesus.” “2000 years ago, who would you guess would have more impact? Jesus or the Roman Empire?” “The real question is not “who was this man?” but “who is this man?””

QUESTIONS TO COMMENT ON:

i. If you are a communicator, what is one way that you have learned to magnify Jesus in a way that impacts those who don’t believe is God? What did you learn from John’s talk?ii. What impacted you most from John’s talk? Or today’s sessions?
